A most unusual, and very expensive rug has been unveiled at the Internation Furniture and Design Exhibition (INFDEX) 2010 which closes today at the Doha Exhibition Center.
To make this spectacular piece took three master weavers four and a half years. Made entirely of pure 24 Karat gold and close to eighteen million knots, the "Universe" Carpet as it is known depicts over two hundred animals, fifty different colors, the moon, the sun and symbols of the twelve months. The Turkish made "Universe" rug has an asking price of $3.2 million dollars. Although the large asking price seems as astronomical as its' name, with an exceptionally high failure rate due to the ultra unique and valuable materials used, there is little margin for error during construction of a carpet such as this.
Bülent Durmaz, Manager of LoomArt, the commissioners
of the Universe Carpet stated: "You only have 20 percent of chance to complete the
carpet. If you
commit any mistake, there’s no chance you can recover your expenses,"
