Where to find Signatures in Signed Persian Rugs

Go Back to locating Signatures

NOTE: This entry on signatures is for Persian more formal workshop and outlying city weavers.  This is not for identifying typical areas of inscription cartouches.

Although not an exact science (and not necessarily affecting value), if & when a Persian rug features a signature and/or trademark, the following outlined areas are the most likely places to find them! P.S.: If your rug does not feature a signature, don't fret it!

Remember, there is a "top" and "bottom" of a rug

GREEN:  The most common areas to find signatures or trademarks:  Top and center of the rug, either in the minor/major or main borders. Typical rugs featuring signatures in these areas would include Tabriz, kashan, isfahan, nain, Kerman, Kermanshah, Sarouk, mashad, ardekan, Qum, etc.  Weavers who signing in these areas include Habibian (Nain), Seirafian (Isfahan).  Older weavers: tabatabaie (Tabriz), (all Kerman) Arjemand, Kermani, Costelli Brothers, Milani, etc.

YELLOW:  Second most common areas to find small signatures. Weavers slightly outside of cities may weave signatures in the yellow outlined areas, generally toward the top of the rug, and in the corners of outer corner border and inner corner border.  City workshops such as tabatabaie (Tabriz) and even Qum rugs have also been noted to weave signatures in these areas, although more commonly in the green outlines.

RED: Third most likely area to find signatures.  The upper two red rectangles would not be uncommon for higher grade tabriz rugs with a combination kilim and raised-pile areas.  In addition, some Isfahan's and other noted city workshops in Iran may feature signatures in these areas as well.  Located closer to the middle of a rug, closer to the inner guard border, we have seen unique examples of Fereghan Sarouk's featuring signatures, in addition to others as well.
