The accepted definition of an Oriental Weaving as defined by the Orra (oriental rug Retailers of America): "Hand-made of natural fibers with a pile knotted and woven on a warp and weft incorporating individual character and design. Countries of origin are: the Balkans, Near, Mid and Far East."
Although the words carpet and rug are used almost interchangeably, an Oriental Rug is the same criteria as above, but smaller in size usually measuring less than 5'x8'. An Oriental Carpet is a term used to a carpet measures over 5'x8'.
An Oriental Weaving may also be made of synthetic fibers, however is fairly uncommon.
"Oriental Design" is an accepted trade definition of a machine made or hand tufted rug using an Oriental Design.
