Unfortunately for this Sotheby's sale coming up October 7, 2009, we're based in NY and this auction is being held in London... Although Sotheby's has really accelerated their website with their new e-catalogue. Here are a few carpets from the Arts of the Islamic World Sale that stood out to us. All prices are noted in GBP: Use the Sotheby's Currency Converter. The market is soft, but here are our votes for the 'potential performers.'

Rug Rag Notes:
Farahan silk rugs are rare as it is. This one is interesting in several respects: Featuring very soft and subtle pastel colors and a signature top and center. The border features cross sections of lotus flowers (palmettes) and a Safavid Fragment connecting design elements.

Rug Rag Notes:
This Oushak Stood out to us as it was strikingly similar an Ushak sold by Christies last year. That particular piece made it to our top ten highest prices paid for Oriental Rugs 2008. More than 3 Fold the average auction estimate. This piece offered by Sotheby's does appear to have somewhat less saturated colors, although you never know how the market will react.

Rug Rag Notes:
This is going to be a rug to watch. When it comes to pieces of this caliber, collectors don't necessarily 'size it up' by cost per foot. However, the estimate is among the higher dollar per square foot we've seen for some time. inscriptions throughout and appears fully intact.
