Sotheby's London, October 7, 2009 Arts of the Islamic World

Unfortunately for this Sotheby's sale coming up October 7, 2009, we're based in NY and this auction is being held in London...  Although Sotheby's has really accelerated their website with their new e-catalogue.  Here are a few carpets from the Arts of the Islamic World Sale that stood out to us. All prices are noted in GBP:  Use the Sotheby's Currency Converter.  The market is soft, but here are our votes for the 'potential performers.'

 Star Tabriz

Rug Rag Notes:

You don't see too many of these around. In the past few decades of auction catalogues we've seen just a very small handful of these types of star tabriz.

Lot 265 Description

A STAR SHAPED TABRIZ SILK RUG, NORTHWEST PERSIA

probably intended as a table cover
approximately 146 by 146cm., 4ft. 9in. by 4ft. 9in.

circa 1900

Estimate:

3,000-5,000 GBP

 Tabriz Table Cover Silk

Silk Faraghan Signed

Rug Rag Notes

Farahan silk rugs are rare as it is.  This one is interesting in several respects: Featuring very soft and subtle pastel colors and a signature top and center.  The border features cross sections of lotus flowers (palmettes) and a Safavid Fragment connecting design elements.

Lot 266 Description

A SAROUK FARAGHAN SILK RUG, WEST PERSIA

inscribed in Persian in nasta'liq script, .Isma'il, .reading as:
.farmayesh-e isma'il va aba ."[On] the order of Ismai'il and [his] father" or as .farmayesh-e isma'il vaba .. ."[On] the order of Isma'il Vaba"

approximately 203 by 129cm., 6ft. 8in. by 4ft. 3in.

Estimate:

3,000-5,000 GBP

 Safavid Border Farahan Silk

 Persian Silk Heriz

Rug Rag Notes

We love silk Heriz rugs. This particular piece features rich, deep colors which seat well with the market.

Lot 268 Description

A HERIZ SILK RUG, NORTHWEST PERSIA

approximately 140 by 113cm., 4ft. 7in. by 3ft. 8in.

circa 1875

Estimate:

10,000-15,000 GBP

 Silk Heriz Spandrel

 Small Medallion Oushak

Rug Rag Notes:

This Oushak Stood out to us as it was strikingly similar an Ushak sold by Christies last year.  That particular piece made it to our top ten highest prices paid for Oriental Rugs 2008. More than 3 Fold the average auction estimate.  This piece offered by Sotheby's does appear to have somewhat less saturated colors, although you never know how the market will react.

Lot 271 Description

AN OUSHAK "SMALL MEDALLION" RUG, WEST ANATOLIA,

approximately 153 by 113cm., 5ft. by 3ft. 8in.

late 16th century

Estimate:

25,000-35,000 GBP

 16th Century Oushak

Safavid Silk Isfahan

Rug Rag Notes:

This is going to be a rug to watch.  When it comes to pieces of this caliber, collectors don't necessarily 'size it up' by cost per foot.  However, the estimate is among the higher dollar per square foot we've seen for some time. inscriptions throughout and appears fully intact.

Lot 276 Description

A SAFAVID SILK, WOOL AND METAL-THREAD PRAYER RUG, ISPHAHAN, CENTRAL PERSIA

approximately 163 by 110cm., 5ft. 4in. by 3ft. 7in.

late 16th or early 17th century

Estimate:

80,000-120,000 GBP

SOLD:

SAFAVID RUG
