There are a lot of things you can do as an Oriental rug owner to prolong the life and the look of your carpet. While you can spend hundreds of dollars having your rug professionally cleaned, one of the easiest (and least expensive) ways to increase longevity of your oriental rug and make it look better is to...
WALK ON IT WITH SOCKS!
Sounds pretty unbelievable, right? The fact is, many foreign elements which are tracked indoors by the treads of sneakers, shoes and boots are harmful and abrasive to your rug. Things such as dirt, grit, and tar will all eventually work their way down to the base of your rug, and after time, slowly wear away the foundation. The rubber soles and dirt will also tend to muddle the sharpness of the pile, and also leave the rug with a dull finish, detracting from the sheen of the wool and overall appeal of your rug.
The idea is simple: Walking on your Oriental Rug with socks not only reduces the possibility of dirt and grit getting forced into your rug, but more importantly, actually polishes the wool. Fiber against fiber will give the pile of your rug a nice even sheen, thereby improving luster, and making your rug look newer (and better) for longer!
Cheers!
