"We were browsing around the internet and caught something a little
unexpected.
Be sure to ask the right questions when shopping for hand
knotted 'tableau' carpets."
Tableau as defined by method.vtheatre.net:
"A still image, a frozen moment or "a photograph." It is created by posing still bodies and communicates a living representation of an event, an idea or a feeling."
There's quite a following for such rugs. However, it's important those who are considering acquisition of weavings which interpret 'photographic images' including portraits, landscapes, historical events or other: Do so with caution and ask for proper images.*
We were astounded by the following rug seen on an unnamed website (seen on right & below). The detail, clarity and colors would otherwise indicate an unbelievable master weaving with extraordinary knot count. While many of the rugs were quite incredible, be sure to look VERY closely at images provided before clicking the "buy it now!" These are rugs which are advertised as hand knotted, however, it's clear there was a photograph substitution. This is not a rug shown as demonstration, but an 'actual' rug available for purchase!
*Accurately representing an oriental rug online is very important. If you find photograph representations you believe may not appropriately represent an online advertised rug, notify us. This may include, but is not limited to: Heavy manipulation of contrast or color, photo editing, or misguiding information, please drop us a line.
With the internet acting as one of the major portals for Oriental rug sales, it's important that buyer's have the comfort of knowing e-tailers are advertising in an ethical manner. See our Rug Rag Standards for Online Rug Vendors.
