While recently Custom Carpets such as those in the White House Oval Office, in particular "The Bush Carpet" have been a frequent interest of many, there are drawbacks to many hand tufted carpets that the public may be unfamiliar with. Aside from the short comings of tufted carpets, taking on the task of designing an Oriental Rug from scratch is nothing short of daunting to say the least.
Considering and weighing options noted above, the best way by far to approach the desire for a "one-off" rug is to have it created using a company such as Ancient Weave in Manhattan. After passing by Ancient Weave in New York, we decided to take a stop in last Friday for a surprise visit.
Ancient Weave features a fantastic showroom and design studio to meet the needs of most any decorator or individual seeking custom hand knotted oriental rugs from Tibet. Full size carpets on display in addition to 2'x3' samples offer exceptional design renditions with the option for custom coloration. While Ancient Weave does offer "traditional" design carpets, what appealed to us most is the highly specialized focus with clear selections. Standard qualities are 60 and 100 knot (see KPSI) rugs: No need to sort through the sometimes overwhelming and confusing rug inventories seen at department stores often littered with "uglies": Ancient Weave has cutting edge designs. Expect friendly "non-agressive" service.

Below: Examples of two identical design carpets from Ancient
Weave. Notice how different Top Colors can make transform a rug,
perhaps even offering the implication of an entirely different design! Creating your own carpet with a design studio is FAR easier than creating a custom rug independently.
