Here at Rug Rag we personally are fans of Law and Order: SVU , but even if you aren't, it can be agreed that Mariska Hargitay is the type of actress who does more than just act. For those of you who aren't familiar with the show, Mariska plays the lead part of Detective Olivia Benson and spends her days cleaning the streets of New York of its sexual predators. Her role in the show has clearly had a very significant impact on Hargitay's life, as she started the Joyful Heart Foundation in 2004. The foundation is to "help survivors of sexual assault heal their minds, bodies and spirits and reclaim their lives".

Recently Mariska was photographed and interviewed by Karastan for their "Make A Statement: Your Own" print campaign. The photographs (shown below) picture Hargitay posing with rugs underfoot and wearing outifts that fit the motif of the rug. In the interview she talks about moving from Los Angeles, where she was born, to New York. After marrying her husband, writer/actor Peter Hermann, the couple moved into their own place. Hargitay talks about decorating her house to fit with her California roots, " I ended up doing the dining room in the most beautiful deep red and the kitchen in an orangey-yellow. I painted my living room purple and put in this great green, velvety couch and this big wonderful carpet. It was like a Moroccan den, very decadent and lush. Every room evoked a completely different feeling. It was all very exotic, but soothing-although you wouldn't think so when you hear about it." It's great to see her acknowledge interiors as an important part of everyday life.

Mariska also mentions her need for a large amount of light, and in her first apartment she didn't have enough and started to feel depressed. Interiors really do play a large part of how we feel when we are at home, which is where we should feel most comfortable. According to Hargitay, "A home is an extension of you. It's like a big essay about yourself, where you've been, what soothes you, what makes you feel safe." You may not be able to fix the ugly bushes on your neighbors’ lawn, but you can know that once you're inside your own house, you can create a space which you can feel comfortable in. Carpets are a great way to tie together a room, as they can bridge wall colors and the furniture, and we happily welcome Mariska Hargitay to the Carpet world!
