Kilim Oriental Rugs and Carpets

A Kilim is a rug which has been woven using a special weaving technique which renders the final item as a low profile, compact rug.  Kilims are often 100% wool: this would include both the patterned weaving, as well as the foundation, or "warps".  Unlike other Oriental Rugs and Carpets, Kilims do not have a pile: Due to construction, they are reversible from both front to back.

Kilims usually feature bold colors such as red, rust, white, blue and variations of such.  Other top colors would include pink, greens, golds and many others.  It's not uncommon for Kilims to have vegetable or natural dyes to color the wool.  The designs of Kilims are often referred to as Southwestern, or even have what some would call a "ski-lodge" type feel to them.

If a kalim rug is not reversible, as in thread ends show on the back side, is it not authentic?

Hi, it may be authentic, we would have to see photographs. It could be a Soumac! Send photos to info@rugrag.com, we can take a look and post an answer for you on the blog :)
