Kashmir Silk Oriental Rugs and Carpets

Kashmir Silk rugs vary a great deal in quality, however, contrary to stigmas attached to some Indian weavings, there are some quite exceptional pieces which may be found.  Kashmir Silk rugs are very similar to Silk Ghoms in that the designs which are used are not bound by any one distinct style.  Often, these types of rugs incorporate traditional Persian Designs.

Perhaps some of the more common designs of which are used include a "Garden" design, which is a typical panel design incorporating the four seasons.  Design elements of which are used include willow trees, cypress trees, mehrab panels and other.  This style of rug is interesting, as often each panel could stand alone as it's own rug.  However, as previously stated, these rugs are not bound by any one type of design, although more frequently found designs include the panel design and medallion.

Kashmir Silk with cotton foundation: Panel Design, Garden design

Kashmir rugs often have a thicker pile than the Persian counterpart.  Perhaps what sets these rugs apart from Ghom silks for example, is that it's not uncommon to find a Kashmir silk rug to be woven upon a cotton foundation, and sometimes include a short kilim before the fringe begins.  However, Kashmir rugs may also be found as silk piled rugs woven on silk foundations, this is somewhat of a more unusual find.  Another distinguishing factor for silk Kashmir rugs is the use of multiple yarn ply.  This is found more frequently in Kashmir silks than in silk Ghom rugs.  KPSI for a Kashmir silk can vary from as low as 100 upwards of 800 KPSI, the finer pieces starting at the 400 KPSI area.

Things to be wary of when purchasing is the implementation of artificial silk, so be sure to purchase from a trusted dealer.
