Kashan Oriental Rugs and Carpets

Kashan Oriental Rug designs are perhaps some of the most popular of all Persian Designs.  These rugs are highly characterised by both the use of color, designs and design elements.  While there are many exceptions, traditionally, Kashan colors which are most often used are red (in the field), blue (in the border) and white.

While knot count and quality vary greatly, these rugs are often found to have 250 KPSI +.  Due to the popularity of such designs, it's not uncommon to find many Kashan Design rugs which are not true Kashans.  This style of rug has been interpreted by many surrounding towns, and often found in machine made rugs.  One of the more recently popular Kashan design rugs was that of which was featured in the movie The Big Lebowski.  While the rug in the movie was actually an Ardekan (a lower grade commercial quality Iranian rug), it serves as a great demonstration for how this design has great popularity.

Perhaps some of the more notable elements to Kashan rugs and carpets is the design itself.  While Kashan rugs may take many forms, the most commonly found is the medallion.  Design elements which are used include palmettes, and sometimes Islimis.  Palmettes are basically a stylized flower, usually circular in shape.  Islimis is a design element which is found in Isfahan rugs as well, however used somewhat less frequently in Kashans.  This design element appears similar to a spiraled vine which has small blooming flowers stemming from the main vine.

Older Kashans often are found to have many more colors (and more advantageous colors) than those of newer production.  It's not uncommon to find a semi-antique Kashan with orange outlines.

Kashan rugs are usually found to be woven of wool pile, on a cotton foundation.  Often these rugs are fairly thin, with a closely sheered pile.
