This post is not all inclusive on how to identify an Indian weaving, however encompasses many elements to consider when evaluating where your rug was made. We have
compiled several main indicators which we believe to be useful for many
common, commercially available rugs to use in assessing the country of
origin, more specifically in this entry, Indian weavings.*
The four main indicators which we use to demonstrate how to identify whether your rug is an Indian weaving CLICK ON EACH IMAGE TO SEE EXAMPLES AND ASSESSMENT:
Fringe, kilim (kelim), fringe knots, and cotton warps:
Edging, binding, sides, surging, etc.:
Knot density, KPSI (knots per square inch), knot arrangement, (and in some, weft assessment):
Corner shot, design execution & translation of weaving to the face of the rug:

*Understanding the country of origin for carpets is a complex matter,
which is sometimes difficult even for a seasoned professional to assess
in person. There are almost infinate looks to construction of rugs
which appear almost identical from country to country, and many styles
which have not been incorporated into this guide. This assessment may generalize types of commercially available rugs, specific to a certain vintages or eras.
