A Rug To Beat Your Drum On

We caught a drum forum talking about the best "drum rug" to keep the set from sliding all over while playing.  Hand knotted rugs and percussion have a lot more in common than many would initially believe.  Often, old tradition of carpet weaving would begin with a written blueprint of the rug to be knotted.  This would be presented for the head of the home to direct weavers (often women in the family) on what colors to use for the next knot being placed.  The way in which these instructions were dictated commonly was in a rhythmic chant.

The progression of a carpet, start to finish, in itself would be a song.  Foundation warps strung vertically top to bottom: colors called, knots tied, warps packed horizontally to fasten rows.  The final product a culmination of great work, patience and dedication yielding a symmetrical, yet almost always 'flawed' handmade piece of art from scratch. Interesting to get a drummers' view on rugs, as we've already had Greg Lakes', The Dead and Staind.
