Lot 199: Extremely Rare and Important Silk Heriz Carpet

August 27, 2008

Sotheby's May 19, 1984. EXTREMELY RARE AND IMPORTANT SILK HERIZ CARPET, Northwestern Persia circa 1875 , Approximately 8 feet 3 inches (2.52 m.) x 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 m.) Nineteenth century approximations of sophisticated 16th and 17th century vase designs often lack the vigor of their classical precedents. In the present example, the naive rendering of the palmettes drawn with only a minimal design scheme offers a sparkling contrast that is the hallmark of many silk Heriz rugs; executed with the most luxurious of materials )silver and silk), these rugs succeed not by their opulence but by their disarming charm and naivete. For design antecendents to this group, please see McMullan, Joseph V., Islamic Carpets, Near Eastern Art Research Center, Inc., New York, 1965, plate 16, pages 81-82 Estimate: $80,000 / 100,000 more
